How to know that word is a noun, verb, adjective,adverb
Noun >person, place or thing
>ends with suffixes such as: -s, -ment, -ness, -ery, -aire
>follows syntactic form: DET ___ or DET___ Adj
Verb >action,state of being
>ends with suffixes such as: -ed, -ing, -s, ify
>follows auxiliaries and modals
Adjective>Express qualities
>suffixes include -er, -est, -al, able,-like, -ish
>follows determiners, intensifiers, adverbs, and precede nouns.

What is the base?
A base is the form to which an affix is added. In many cases the base is also the root . For example "dark" is the root for the entire and the base for the word "darkened".
