CES1353 A SURVEY OF PROSE FORMS AND POETRY IN ENGLISH
Source:Past year questions of JULY 2012 SEMESTER  B.ED. (HONS) TESL UNISEL

1. Would you characterize the tone of the play as comic, tragic, tragicomic, or something else? Provide evidence from the play to support your stand.

I characterized the tone of the play as comic because Woody Allen used this comedy to explain we should be optimistic to our life. He used humor to tell us that death is not as awful as people realized.

2. Describe Death's character based on the details of the opening scene provided.

As Allen personifies him, Death is on his first day at the job and is a bit of a bumbler. When we first meet Death, he is anxious and fearful because he almost broke his neck climbing in the bedroom window.
3.What do the first few lines of conversation imply about the relationship of Death and Nat? Explain your answer with evidence from the play.

Nat and Death don't treat each other as strangers as"Nat bargains for extra life time" and Death appearances similar to Nat " You look a little like me".

4. How does Nat outwit Death? Provide 2 evidences from the play to support your statements.

Nat outwitted Death by offering a game and he made a deal if he won he will get an extra day to live. Then, they played a game called ‘Gin Rummy’ which Death was so excited to play the game as he will get an amount of money. But when Nat’s wins the game which held at his own place, Death is chased out and forced to leave with nothing to show for his night’s work. Nat’s get this idea because he is still need time and he is not ready to go with Death.

5. What irony is depicted in the drama? Explain with examples from the play.

Death want to surprise Nat by entering his house from the windows. However, Death failed, he has to go home and come again tomorrow.

6. State and discuss one main theme of the drama.

Death is unpredictable.

People don't know when will they die, but they know they will die sooner or later. No matter in what condition we are, if it is time for us to die, we will die. In this play, Nat shows that he is not ready to die.

1. Some people see Drawing Number One as a simple hat, while others think it represents an elephant inside a boa constrictor. What is the meaning of these different perspectives? Discuss.

Some see the illustration as a hat because they are "grown ups" and it seems imagination and whimsy fade with age. They see it as a drawing with little importance. Someone else may see it as an elephant inside a boa constrictor because they have the heart of a child. They are able to see the truth more clearly than an adult who only thinks about "matters of consequence."

2. "The Little Prince" is an allegory that is heavily filled with elements of symbolism. State and explain 3 symbols present in the novel.

Star symbolizes the take on different meaning throughout the book. For the businessman, stars are number to count and own; for the king, stars are the subjects and for the pilot the stars makes him remember the prince who lives on another planet.

Baobab tree symbolizes problems that could happen even worse if it is not pull out as it is small.

Water symbolizes spiritual fear of dying. It is also a symbol of life

3. The rose did not tell the little prince that she loves him but he continues to love her. Discuss the relationship between the rose and the prince.

Her vanity was certainly excessive that's why. She is very demanding that he have to carry out many things to please her, such as surrounding her with a screen and covering her in a glass dome. The little prince continues to love her because it was his responsible that once he tamed her, there develops a relationship and commitment between him and the rose.

4.When the narrator and the prince search for a well, the narrator appears finally to understand the lessons that the prince has related to him. Discuss the theme of the novel in relation to the mentioned event.

One of the story’s themes is that true understanding cannot be achieved without real-world experience. The journey is more important than the destination itself. The events that happen to the narrator in the desert represent this theme. Even though the narrator learns much from listening to the prince’s story, it’s evident that learning the prince’s lessons through actual experience gives them a clarity that would not be made otherwise. The narrator finds the well on his own—his guide, the prince, falls asleep and needs to be carried all night. In the end, the prince’s story provides only a plot to the narrator about how much he has been missing. To obtain the fulfillment he seeks, he must act on his own. By extension, Saint-Exupéry teaches us that we must ourselves act to learn the lessons in his story, although this moral is never made explicitly clear.

1.The point of view in "A Rose for Emily" is unique. The story is told by an unnamed narrator in the first-person collective. Who might this narrator be? Justify your answer with evidence from the story.

The point of view is that of the town's people  itself, told from an unnamed narrator’s perspective but sharing the town’s feelings. The use of “we believed” and “people hardly saw her at all” demonstrates this collective consciousness.  The town puts its information together, and the town's people  is the narrator.

2.What could Miss Emily's house represent? Provide evidence from the text.

Emily lived in what was once an elegant house, “decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies,” the narrator says, and “set on what had once been our most select street.” But Emily made no attempt to improve or modernize it. It show that she loves living in the past including her ideology.

3. Despite the story's confusing sequence, many events are foreshadowed.

a. Give 2 examples of foreshadowed events as found in the event.

She bought the arsenic that label for poisoning rats and she bought complete clothing for a man.

b. How does foreshadowing enrich the story?

Foreshadowing give the element of mystery and suspenses. For example The "smell" that develops is certainly an example of foreshadowing, though it turns out to be the rotting body of Homer and not just a dead rat. Emily's descent into mental instability is foreshadowed by the knowledge that it ran in her family--that her great aunt had gone "crazy at last."

4. What do you infer to be the author's attitude toward Emily Grierson? Discuss and provide evidence from the story to support your answer.

I think the narrator treats her as an eccentric old woman who might have a few skeletons in her closet (or upstairs bedroom). He doesn't moralize about her or her ways. In fact, he is telling us more about the townspeople who, although not abusive to her, were neglectful in letting her become such a hermit and isolate herself from them.

5. State and discuss one (1) theme of the short story.

The theme is society's dynamic. It is about how judgement can affect and influence people or the impact of society's prejudice. The town's people although not abusive to her, were neglectful in letting her become such a hermit and isolate herself from them. They let her do whatever she wants not because they really respect her or being polite to her. It is just they don't want to be responsible to what would happen to her. So they just ignore her and they hope their ignorance will give a message to her that they don't like her.

Dulce et Decorum Est questions?

CES1353 A SURVEY OF PROSE FORMS AND POETRY IN ENGLISH

Source:Past year questions of JULY 2012 SEMESTER  B.ED. (HONS) TESL UNISEL

1. Through out the poem, the poet uses some particularly bitter imagery in a string of similes.

a. State an example each of the following: visual(sight) imagery, gustatory(taste) imagery, tactile(touch) imagery and auditory(sound) imagery.

Visual imagery can be seen at "Bent double like old beggars", gustatory imagery would be at "Come gargling from the forth-corrupted lungs, Bitter as cud, Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues", for tactile imagery would be at "He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning and for auditory would be "Gas!Gas! Quick, boys!"

b. What effects does the use of these imageries have on the poem? Provide justification for your    answer.

It is to show the soldiers in war's condition and he intend to share his experience with a very well description of it.

2. Describe the persona's attitude towards war. Provide evidence from the text to support your answer.

Line 25-28 he describes his persona attitude towards war. He emphasizes that being a soldier is not as sweet as it seems to be but it is horrible as it can be.

3. Explain the irony of the final 2 lines in poem. Provide evidence from the text to support your answer.

Line 27-28 shows the propaganda that had been played to attract young men to join army.

4. Why does the poet end the poem with a Latin instead of an English slogan? Provide justification for your answer.

Latin symbolized educated and civilize culture. If ones use Latin phrase in his/her work, it will symbolize that the writer is also an educated and high moral person.

5. State and discuss the main theme of the poem.

Propaganda and irony of joining army.

From the last 2 lines, the poet reminds about the propaganda to attract young men to join army.It is translated to "It is sweet and honour to die in one's country". The irony from the slogan is it is not as sweet as we expected as we already in the army. People who join army wants to be honoured and to be called a hero but becoming an army is not easy. He is not intend to demotivate people to not to join army. His intention is just to make people to see if ones is brave enough to join army and he wants to emphasize thing that happened at the battlefield is hard.

WILFRED OWEN
Dulce et Decorum Est
Best known poem of the First World War

   DULCE ET DECORUM EST(1)

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares(2) we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest(3) began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots(4)
Of tired, outstripped(5) Five-Nines(6) that dropped behind.
Gas!(7) Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets(8) just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime(9) . . .
Dim, through the misty panes(10) and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering,(11) choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud(12)
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest(13)
To children ardent(14) for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.(15)
Wilfred Owen
Thought to have been written between 8 October 1917  and March, 1918

Notes on Dulce et Decorum Est

1.  DULCE ET DECORUM EST - the first words of a Latin saying (taken from an ode by Horace). The words were widely understood and often quoted at the start of the First World War. They mean "It is sweet and right." The full saying ends the poem: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori - it is sweet and right to die for your country. In other words, it is a wonderful and great honour to fight and die for your country.
2.  Flares - rockets which were sent up to burn with a brilliant glare to light up men and other targets in the area between the front lines (See illustration, page 118 of Out in the Dark.)
3.  Distant rest - a camp away from the front line where exhausted soldiers might rest for a few days, or longer
4.  Hoots - the noise made by the shells rushing through the air
5.  Outstripped - outpaced, the soldiers have struggled beyond the reach of these shells which are now falling behind them as they struggle away from the scene of battle
 6.  Five-Nines - 5.9 calibre explosive shells
7.  Gas! -  poison gas. From the symptoms it would appear to be chlorine or phosgene gas. The filling of the lungs with fluid had the same effects as when a person drowned
8.  Helmets -  the early name for gas masks
9.  Lime - a white chalky substance which can burn live tissue
10.  Panes - the glass in the eyepieces of the gas masks
11.  Guttering - Owen probably meant flickering out like a candle or gurgling like water draining down a gutter, referring to the sounds in the throat of the choking man, or it might be a sound partly like stuttering and partly like gurgling
12.  Cud - normally the regurgitated grass that cows chew usually green and bubbling. Here a similar looking material was issuing from the soldier's mouth
13.  High zest - idealistic enthusiasm, keenly believing in the rightness of the idea
14.  ardent - keen
These notes are taken from the book, Out in the Dark, Poetry of the First World War, where other war poems that need special explanations are similarly annotated. The ideal book for students getting to grips with the poetry of the First World War.
Pronunciation
The pronunciation of Dulce is DULKAY. The letter C in Latin was pronounced like the C in "car". The word is often given an Italian pronunciation pronouncing the C like the C in cello, but this is wrong. Try checking this out in a Latin dictionary!  -  David Roberts.

Asas pembentukan keluarga bahagia in English(About builiding a happy family)

Malay version made by: Anonymous
Translated by: me

Asas pembentukan keluarga bahagia
The fundamentals to build  a happy family

THE ESTABLISHMENT of strong nation depends on a strong family institution and not split. If the family institutions are getting fragile, it might also threaten the nation. The strength of a family must be based on love and affection between husband and wife and family warm relationship.

Strong institutions and a harmonious family founded on the compassion, love and harmony that finally united through marriage. A family is the basis of civilization. Families have made the basis of the strength in civilization and race.

Islam strongly emphasizes the basis of a happy and prosperous family. This establishment begins with faith, belief and piety among husband and wife. Thus, a father, mother, child and family members will live in peace in a happy home. Family ancestry will be strengthened when the birth of offspring becomes a continuation of a family.

Teenage social problem nowadays is one of the causes of flaws and divorce among married couples. Parents who divorce will lead the children of becoming the victims of divorce and find a solution themselves. Parents who divorce can no longer play a role in their children's education. Many factors led to the collapse of the family institution or a divorce nowadays.

Among other things, the existence of a third person in the marriage, the rising cost of living, many of the working wives led families neglected and no sense of love and understanding between husband and wife. The effects of divorce, as the children becoming teenagers will find a solution with their own expression of feelings to their peers. When they are mistakenly choosing peer, they finally caught up with the first approach that followed by cigarette drug abuse, leading to a bad lifestyle and trapped with free sex that eventually ruin their future.

Masyarakat sering menyalahkan remaja berkaitan masalah sosial.
Kajian menunjukkan anak-anak berusia 7 hingga 12 tahun mudah menerima didikan ibu bapa.
Sementara kanak-kanak yang mulai meningkat remaja iaitu mereka yang berusia 13 hingga 17 tahun mudah menerima pengaruh rakan sebaya.

Society often blames teenagers related to social problems. Some say the problem arises because the parents do not really play their roles. Parents are also difficult to accept that they are the cause of problems that occur towards their children and families. A research shows that children aged 7 to 12 years old easily accept the guidance of parents. While children which begin to grow of those aged 13 to 17 years old easily accept the influence of peers.

In the guidance process, parents still play an important role in guiding children and do not let children affected by the peers. Basic affection began with the compassion from the parents. Children need to be nurtured with responsibility.

They also need to be independent, educated with honesty and respect, build dignity and self-worthy, build a culture to love knowledge, encourage creativity, learn about saving money, do not waste time in vain, to learn to keep themselves safe, and find out about the world information technology.

This followed with the recommendations of Umar bin Khattab to educate children according to age. Meanwhile, according to figures educators as Khurshid Ahmad, the changes of a nation depends on education for the main way towards the preparation of the future is education. When a parent or parents are unable to care for the child, the country will have trouble on keeping the child in the street.

This means children who are caught up in a variety of social ills such as  involved with drug addiction, free sex, prostitution and abandoned babies eventually become a burden and responsibility of the state.
The government is aware that the nature of the children is like a white cloth. (clean slate).

The government already allocating RM91 million for the development of human capital to strengthen education in childhood, primary and secondary levels as well as making people more prosperous life is the first step to address this issue. The strength and foundation of a happy and balanced developments  lies in faith of a marriage
Justeru, membesarkan anak bukan tugas mudah. Anak-anak adalah penghias sesebuah rumah tangga.
Tanggungjawab mendidik anak adalah tanggungjawab ibu bapa.

It described the Prophet Muhammad SAW  in his saying: "Whoever guarantees me one thing, I assure him four things. He must make a good relationship (on good terms with his family) his family would surely love him, expansion of livelihood, lives longer and be admitted to heaven that he promised. "( Al Rabii ') Therefore, maintain good relations in the family, between husband and wife, children and nearest relative. Good relationship built with love and fulfill our responsibility as parents to provide their children with moral education, faith and the knowledge of world and the hereafter. Thus, raising a child is not an easy task. Children are the adornments of a family. The responsibility to educate children is the responsibility of parents.
